Periodontitis is an inflammatory condition which affects the supporting and surrounding soft tissues of the tooth and may cause loose teeth and eventually tooth loss as the disease spreads to the jawbone. The symtoms are not always easy to discover, thus the disease is clandestine and the damages may advance, and a tooth might begin to loosen before one notices.

Periodontitis is caused by a bacterial infection that affects the gums when the toxins contained in plaque begin to irritate and inflame the gum tissues. The bacterial infection colonizes in the gum pockets between the teeth, out of reach for you to brush. When the bacteria reach below the gum line, it will eventually lead to the destruction of the connective tissue and jawbone. As the jawbone deteriorates, the tooth fibres will lose its grip more and more. The tooth will become loose, where as it will loosen successively until it falls out or is removed.
